- Died: December 9th, 2021.
- Details of death: Died at the age of 82.
Alfred Unser was an American racing driver who was the younger brother of Jerry and Bobby Unser, as well as the father of Al Unser Jr. He was the second of four men (A. J. Foyt, himself, Rick Mears, and Hélio Castroneves) to win the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race four times (1970, 1971, 1978, 1987), the fourth of five to win the race in consecutive years, and the 1970, 1983, and 1985 National Champion. He was the only person who had both a sibling (Bobby) and a child (Al Jr.) who had also won the Indianapolis 500. (coincidentally, all three captured their final Indy 500 wins racing for Team Penske). Johnny and Robby Unser, Al’s nephews, have also competed in the event. After his son Al Unser Jr. entered the national championship circuit in 1983, Unser was dubbed “Al Unser Sr.” or “Big Al” by the public.
I feel loss & sadness at the passing of Al Unser. One of the top 5 racers who has ever lived – and the kindest, calmest, smartest, toughest, most fun, well-liked guy ever. Our most fun was on dirt; here he and I battled and laughed at DuQuoin Illinois- and then had a beer. RIP pic.twitter.com/BO4iRNjFDr
