Grindstone was a Thoroughbred racehorse that won the Kentucky Derby in 1996. Grindstone won the Louisiana Derby and finished second in the Arkansas Derby as a three-year-old. He then won the 1996 Kentucky Derby in 2:01.06 seconds, defeating Cavonnier by a nose at the finish line. He was jockey Jerry Bailey’s second Kentucky Derby triumph, and trainer D. Wayne Lukas’ second in a row. Grindstone was retired five days after winning the Kentucky Derby due to a bone chip in his knee. He was the first horse to be retired immediately after winning the Kentucky Derby since Bubbling Over in 1926.
