Manolo Santana, or Manuel Santana Martnez, was a Spanish tennis player. In 1965, Ned Potter ranked him as the amateur world No. 1 and in 1966, Lance Tingay ranked him as the amateur world No. 1.
He was cited as saying “grass is just for cows” before winning the US Open and Wimbledon; he believed tennis should be played on artificial grounds rather than grass tennis courts like those at Wimbledon. Several players, including Ivan Lendl, Marat Safin, Marcelo Ros, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, and Jan Kode, have echoed this sentiment over the years, despite his 1973 Wimbledon victory.
