Peng Ming-min was a well-known democratic activist, Taiwan independence enthusiast, and politician. After being arrested for sedition in his native Taiwan in 1964 for writing a manifesto advocating democracy, he fled to Sweden before accepting a position as a university professor in the United States. He returned to Taiwan after 22 years in exile to run as the Democratic Progressive Party’s first presidential candidate in Taiwan’s first direct presidential election in 1996.
