Robert Hughes, Baron Hughes of Woodside, was a British Labour Party politician who served as the Chair of the British Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) from 1976 until 1995, when apartheid in South Africa came to an end. Hughes served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Scotland from March 1974 to July 1975, when he quit over the government’s income policy. Second, at the AAM’s annual general meeting in 1986, Hughes and Roberts refused to hear’motion 16′, resulting in the prolonged censoring of material related to a nearly four-year-long picket of the South African Embassy in London.
Aberdeen Labour are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Robert Hughes, Baron Hughes of Woodside, at the age of 89.
