Gisele Barreto Fetterman was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When she was seven years old, Fetterman came to the United States as an undocumented immigrant with her mother and younger brother, taking up residence in a one-room apartment in New York City. They fled Brazil due to violent crime in their community. In New York the family lived in poverty, and furnished their apartment with furniture they found on the street. Fetterman said that her family often depended on food banks and thrift stores. Her mother, who had a Doctor of Philosophy degree from a Brazilian university and had worked as a nutritionist and educator, took jobs cleaning hotels and houses, and was often denied pay due to her status as an undocumented immigrant.

Reed starred as a cheerleader in the 2000 teen comedy film Bring It On. She later appeared as herself in the comedy-drama television series V.I.P. and the 2003 dance film Honey. Blaque disbanded after an unsuccessful transition to Elektra in 2003 and failed an attempt at a reunion in 2010. Reed took a hiatus from music to further pursue acting. In the early 2000s, she was engaged to rapper Kurupt and gave birth to their son. On October 26, 2012, Reed died after being struck by a car near Lilburn, Georgia.

Gisele was enrolled in English as a second language program at her school in Queens. Her family later moved to Newark, New Jersey. There, she took admission at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and completed her education.

Although, as the First Lady of Braddock, Pennsylvania, Fetterman founded The Braddock Free Store. It is a non-profit organization that provides local lower-income families with toys, diapers, baby formula, clothing, household items, and furniture.

The organization also serves close to 1,600 families per month. She began the Braddock Bench Project, which concentrated on adding benches to local bus stops. In 2015 she co-founded 412 Food Rescue.
