John Robert Purvis, CBE was a Conservative MEP for Mid Scotland and Fife from 1979 to 1984, then one of Scotland’s seven MEPs from 1999 to 2009. Purvis spoke out in 2001 against the legitimacy of Customs and Excise agents taking wine and cigarettes purchased for personal use by travelers returning from the European Union, claiming that such acts were illegal. Purvis claimed in 2002 that instead of modernizing the airports in Edinburgh and Glasgow, he advocated the construction of a new airport in central Scotland. He is also the Chairman of Belgrave Capital Management in London, and he served on the boards of Kingdom FM Radio Ltd. in Fife and Elmwood College in Cupar for many years.
