Roy Charles Hammond was a legendary soul singer known as Roy C. His best-known song was “Shotgun Wedding,” a top 20 R&B hit in 1965.
Considered somewhat provocative for that era, the song was an even bigger hit overseas in the U.K. Hammond had minor hits with various record labels. In 1973, he wrote and produced the song “Impeach the President” for the Honey Drippers, a group of high school students from Queens. The song was about President Nixon and the Watergate scandal and features one of the most sampled drum tracks in hip hop.
